About CareCompare
CareCompare.ca is an independent, free directory that helps families research and compare senior living facilities across British Columbia. We combine government quality data with real-world Google Reviews to give you a complete picture of each facility.
Why We Built This
Finding the right senior living home for a loved one is one of the most important decisions a family can make. But the information you need is scattered across government reports, Google listings, and individual facility websites. There’s no single place to see quality data, reviews, and facility details side by side.
CareCompare was built to change that. We pull together data from multiple trusted sources so you can compare facilities on the things that actually matter: quality of care, staffing levels, inspection results, and what real families are saying in their reviews.
Our Independence
CareCompare is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or funded by any senior living facility, operator, or health authority. We do not accept payments from facilities to influence their listings or rankings. Our goal is to present accurate, unbiased information so families can make informed decisions.
Our Data Sources
Every piece of data on CareCompare comes from a verified, publicly available source. We never fabricate ratings or reviews.
BC Office of the Seniors Advocate
The provincial government collects and publishes detailed quality data for publicly funded long-term care and assisted living facilities. This includes direct care hours per resident, food spending, staffing levels, CIHI quality indicators (falls, restraint use, pain management), complaint volumes, inspection results, and wait times. We import this data directly from the Seniors Advocate’s published reports.
Google Maps & Reviews
We collect publicly available business information from Google Maps, including ratings, review counts, addresses, phone numbers, websites, and geographic coordinates. Google Reviews provide real-world feedback from residents, families, and visitors that complements the government’s quality metrics.
AI-Powered Review Analysis
For facilities with enough reviews, we use AI to analyze Google Reviews and extract sentiment scores by topic — staff quality, food, cleanliness, activities, and management. The AI identifies common themes in praise and complaints and generates factual summaries, making it easier to understand what reviewers are saying without reading every individual review.
Public Inspection Records
Provincial health authorities conduct regular inspections of licensed care facilities. Where available, we include inspection data and compliance information from these public records.
What We Cover
CareCompare currently lists facilities across all five BC health authorities:
- Long-Term Care — publicly funded residential care for people who need 24-hour professional nursing support
- Assisted Living — housing with personal assistance services for people who can live semi-independently
- Retirement Homes — private-pay seniors residences with varying levels of support
- Dementia & Memory Care — specialized facilities for residents with Alzheimer’s or other cognitive conditions
- Independent Living — seniors communities with minimal support services
Data Accuracy
We work to keep our data accurate and up to date, but conditions at facilities can change. Government data is published periodically by the BC Office of the Seniors Advocate and may not reflect the most current state of a facility. Google Reviews are written by individuals and represent personal experiences.
We strongly recommend contacting facilities directly to verify current information before making decisions. CareCompare is an informational resource and does not provide medical advice.
